Routine eye examinations consist of three parts:

  • Health and wellness exam - The doctor does an examination of the front and back of the eye using various illumination devices.  This may or may not require dilation of the eye.
  • Refraction - The doctor places several lens in front of the eye to gain a "true refraction".  He/she then asked the patient to look at a letter chart to gain a "subjective refraction" - the lens combination that the patient is most comfortable wearing.
  • Contact lens fitting -  The contact lens fitting is only performed on patients currently wearing or wishing to wear contact lenses.  It is considered to be "cosmetic" and is not covered by most insurance.
